Honor 8 may roll out Android 7.0 Nougat update on Jan. 16

Some owners of Huawei’s Honor 8 smartphone may be getting an update to Android 7.0 Nougat a little sooner than expected. A press release from the company’s Japanese office claims that the rollout will begin on Monday, January 16.

The press release adds the update will also include the EMUI 5.0 upgrade, which will add a number of new features compared to the Honor 8’s current EMUI 4.1 version. The press release says the download will be 1.97GB in size.

Previously, Huawei sent out notices to media outlets stating the Honor 8 would get the Nougat and EMUI 5.o update sometime in February. It’s possible that Huawei Japan may have jumped the gun in terms of the rollout time period, but hopefully we will learn very soon whether or not this new date is accurate or not.

Just a reminder: Huawei says that the update to EMUI 5.o will include a machine learning feature that should help with optimizing the phone by prioritizing frequently used apps. It will also allow the Honor 8 to run different user profiles, along with some security and power saving improvements.

This week, we are giving away an Honor 8, a device which accords its owner such a premium design, exceptional internals, and all in a package that doesn’t break the bank; not even close to it.

While the Honor 8 is indeed a great value for the money, it is important to recognize that this is a very competitive price segment so you have many options to chose from. It would be wise to consider what you value most in a smartphone and base your final decision off of that.

Honor has brought what many have wanted from an affordable flagship for a while now: a gorgeous design, a smaller size, and a great camera. In addition, the Honor 8’s excellent performance and IR blaster are not always common on an affordable smartphone.

Honor 8 scheduled to get Nougat and EMUI 5.0 update in Feb. 2017

The Huawei-made Honor 8 smartphone has turned out to be one of the most popular unlocked devices released in 2016. However, the phone launched with Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box. Today, Huawei sent out notices to media outlets informing them that the Honor 8 is scheduled to get its OS upgraded to Android 7.0 Nougat sometime in February 2017.

In addition to the Nougat update, the Honor 8 will also get the EMUI 5.0 upgrade that same month.  This step up from the phone’s EMUI 4.1 version will bring a number of new features along with it. Huawei claims that it will include machine learning feature that will look into the use of the phone by the owner. This will be used to optimize processing resources by prioritizing frequently used apps.

EMUI 5.0 will also allow the Honor 8 to run different user profiles. In other words, you can switch between a work profile on the phone and your more personal one quickly.  The new version will also include improvements for security, including something called “App Lock” that is suppose to make specific apps more secure. Finally, EMUI 5.0 will have a number of different power saving modes to help extend the Honor 8’s battery life.

There’s no word on when exactly the Nougat and EMUI 5.0 update will be released during the month of February for the Honor 8, but we will keep you posted when more information on a specific rollout date is revealed.

Android Nougat beta update rolling out to Honor 8’s testers

Honor is now rolling out EMUI 5.0, based on Android Nougat, to the Honor 8 for those who signed up for its beta program. Honor teamed up with the folks at XDA Developers to recruit the beta users on November 7, and now the 60-or-so selected applicants can test an early version of the software before its official release.

EMUI 5.0 has already been seen on the Huawei Mate 9 (Huawei owns EMUI and the Honor brand) and includes a new design inspired by the colors of the Aegean Sea, tighter security and the ability to add an app drawer to the home screen – for those who prefer a more traditional Android setup.
