Kahaani 2: 1st Tuesday Box Office Collections

Vidya Balan starrer Kahaani 2 witnessed noticeable drop on its 1st Tuesday at the box office.

This suspense thriller raked in approx 1.75* crores yesterday and currently stands with a grand total of 20.76 crores. The film will touch around 22-23 crores mark by the end of its opening week.

Kahaani 2: 1st Tuesday Box Office Collections

The film’s prequel Kahaani had done better business at the Box Office. Around 59 crores, was the 2012’s lifetime business. Since the word of mouth of Kahaani 2 is not very great (compared to Kahaani) and also considering the demonetization factor, its business is on a lower side.

Directed by Sujoy Ghosh, the film also stars Arjun Rampal and Jugal Hansraj in key roles.

Box Office Clash: Salman’s Tubelight Vs Transformers: The Last Knight In Eid 2017

Since past few years, Salman Khan has been booking the Eid slot for his films like Dabangg, Wanted, Ek Tha Tiger, Kick, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Sultan. His upcoming film Tubelight will also hit the screens in Eid, 2017.

But here’s a twist in the tale! Hollywood flick Transformers: The Last Knight, which is the 5th installment of Transformers series is also slated to release on the same date, which is 23rd June, 2017.

Its Salman’s Tubelight Vs Transformers: The Last Knight In Eid 2017

Though the popularity of Transformers franchise is not that high in India, it’s opening is expected to be above average to decent. And moreover, the film will occupy screens in good chunk, which may ultimately affect the business of Tubelight.

Will Transformers: The Last Knight will postpone its release date in India, to avoid clash with Tubelight? We’ll have to wait and watch.

Directed by Kabir Khan, Tubelight stars Zhu Zhu and Sohail Khan in key roles.

Monday Business: Kahaani 2 & Dear Zindagi Are Decent, Though Bollywood Needs A Biggie

With around 5000 screens in India that run Hindi films, there is a capacity of roughly 50 crore available for consumption on a daily basis. Even if one accounts for lower ticket rates at certain properties during the weekdays, there is still a capacity of at least 35 crore available. However, the kind of numbers that are actually being accumulated are way too low for the survival of most of the properties, especially the single screens.

On Monday, Kahaani 2 (currently at 19.72 crore*) brought in around 2.75 crore* and Dear Zindagi (currently at 58.6 crore*) had 1.5 crore* more coming in. This comes to 4.25 crore* between the two films. Now even if we put a rough estimate of around 2 crore coming in from all the other Hindi films in the running (holdover or re-releases), we are still looking at around 6-7 crore collected at best. Now compare it with 35 crore worth of capacity available and we are staring at an all-India collections of just 20%!

Box Office – Kahaani 2 and Dear Zindagi are decent, though Bollywood needs a biggie

Is this the kind of outcome for which theaters actually operate?

Yes, there is going to be Dangal and after that Raees and Kaabil that would bring back the audiences. However, that’s once a month phenomenon at an average. For rest of the weeks, the occupancy is at the bottom in 10%-25% range. It is not just about today when demonetization is hitting cinema viewing public hard. Even on regular weeks, the situation has been like this for a good part of 2016 when only a select few films have succeeded.

Hopefully, better decisions would be made when kick-starting a film project in 2017. There is precious combination of time, energy, money and talent that results in a film being made. Let’s make it all worth it!

*Estimates. Final numbers awaited

Kahaani 2 Stays Stable Over The Weekend, Dear Zindagi Remains Good Too At The Box Office

Kahaani 2 has seen a fine weekend at the Box Office with 16.75 crore* coming in. Of course expectations were much higher as one had expected the collections to be in the range of 18-20 crore. Considering the fact that Kahaani [2012] was a much loved film and writer-director Sujoy Ghosh was coming back with Vidya Balan in the second installment after four years, the opening was expected to be nothing short of stupendous. However, this didn’t really turn out to be the case. On the flipside, the good thing is that at least the film has seen an opening of sorts instead of turning out to be dead rubber like Rock On 2.

When compared to other films belonging to similar genre (dramatic thrillers with suspense), this is how Kahaani 2 stands after the opening weekend:

Wazir21.01 crore
Kahaani 216.75 crore*
TE3N11.13 crore
Madaari9.75 crore

Box Office – Kahaani 2 stays stable over the weekend, Dear Zindagi is good too

Amongst these films, Wazir had managed to eventually cover costs. Now it is expected that Kahaani 2 would be able to break even as well. However weekdays need to be stable from this point on since there is competition from the coming weekend in the form of Befikre which would be released on a major scale.

The film which was released on a much small scale though, Dear Zindagi, has now come close to the 60 crore mark. The film collected 12 crore* more in the second weekend and currently stands at 59 crore*. The Alia Bhatt starrer is now well on its way to cross her Udta Punjab though Kapoor & Sons is tough. Still, the fact remains that the film is already double of her Highway [29 crore] which is a good news.

As for Shah Rukh Khan, this wasn’t really a movie that he was carrying on his shoulders (though he did give it a good boost) and he would now move on to Raees, the promotion of which has already kick-started.

*Estimates. Final numbers awaited

Note: All collections as per production and distribution sources

Kahaani 2 Has A Better ‘Sequel Response’ Than The Rest | Opening Day Box Office Report

Kahaani 2 has netted 4.25 crore on its Day One. Though this is not a huge number per se, when compared to the kind of numbers that other sequels have gathered in the recent weeks on their Day One, the film has still done better. On its release, Kahaani [2012] had brought in 3 crore.

Now Kahaani 2 has opened better, though strictly in absolute numbers as relatively speaking, it is more or less similar due to inflation and higher ticket rates coming into picture.

Arjun Rampal in a still from Kahaani 2

When compared to films with similar budget, this is how the comparison of a sequel release in 2016 with the first in the series stands:

Kahaani [3 crore] and Kahaani 2 [4.35 crore] – Difference: +1.35 crore

Force [5 crore] and Force 2 [6.05 crore] – Difference: +1.05 crore

Tum Bin [0.20 crore] and Tum Bin 2 [0.60 crore] – Difference: +0.40 crore

Rock On [1.75 crore] and Rock On 2 [2.02 crore] – Difference: +0.27 crore

Tere Bin Laden [0.75 crore] and Tere Bin Laden – Dead or Alive [0.75 crore] – Difference: 0 crore

1920 Evil Returns [4 crore] and 1920 London [2.5 crore] – Difference: -1.5 crore

Of course there have been other sequels in 2016 as well with higher budgets and expect for Housefull 3, rest all [Kya Kool Hain Hum 3, Ghayal Once Again, Raaz Reboot and Great Grand Masti] have failed.

Meanwhile, it is a wait and watch moment to see where does Kahaani 2 eventually land. Kahaani had gained immensely from fantabulous word of mouth and grown from a 3 crore Day One to 60 crore lifetime. That happens to just one or two films a year and that too when supported by exceptional word of mouth. In case of Kahaani 2, the acclaim is not as high as Kahaani and that makes Saturday and Sunday numbers all the more crucial.
